She started her career as a model in television advertisement form the year of 1998. Then she started modeling in video albums. In 2003 she debuted in film industry by Bengali movie, Bhalo Theko. After a two year break she appeared in Parinetha, the musical drama film in Bollywood. The opposite role done by Safe Ali Khan. In that film she got her first Film-Fare award.
In 2006 she appeared in Lage Raho munna bhai, lead role by Sanjay Dut and it become the a super box office hit. In 2007 She appeared in Manirathnam's Guru and got positive critic about her charector.
In 2011 she acted in 'The Dirty Picture', and got positive critic review of her role. She acted as Late Smitha in that film and got national award as best Actress in 2012. In 2011 she acted in Malayalam named Urumi.
