She started her acting charector in 1997 with Manirathnam's Iruvar. The hero of this movie is Mr.Mohan Lal (Most prominent actor of world). But it was a box office flop. Then in the year of 1998 she got her first box office hit film named Jeans in Tamil film industry. It was directed by Mr. Shanker.
In the year of 1999 she got first box office hit in Hindi named Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. It was directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. She got her first film fare award for Devadas directed by the Malayalam movie maker Sangeeth Sivan.
In 2003 to 2005 she did not get any hits in box office. Still she remains in industry because of her body structure. In 2009 she married Abhishek bachan. The same year she got padmasri from Govt of India.
